Compounding

Here are a few examples of why a standard drug form or dose may need to be altered:

• Patient allergies or preferences (sugar, gluten, preservative, and alcohol-free, etc.)
• Pill or capsule is too large to swallow comfortably
• Medication may have an unpleasant taste
• The dose needed is not commercially available
• Inability to take medication due to nausea/vomiting or weakness of throat muscles
• Patient has a hard time remembering to take medication as directed
• Overwhelming number of medications
• Medication may be out of production
• Inconvenient medication form
